  IC BUSINESS IS LOOKING UP

Not long ago, the IC sector was terrible due to the recession. Now, business is looking up in the IC industry, based on a sampling of announcements in several sectors.

ASE, Diodes, RFMD and UMC separately report strong demand. And market research firm IC Insights Inc. Monday (March 8) increased its estimate for 2010 semiconductor growth, saying it now expects chip revenue to increase 27 percent this year, reaching $253 billion.

 
     
   
  CHIP-MAKING CAPACITY, DEMAND UP

The chip-making capacity as well as demand is going up around the world – keeping capacity utilization above 90 per cent in many leading-edge sectors.

According to the Semiconductor International Capacity Statistics (SICAS) organization, global utilization of wafer fab capacity reached 89.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009 – up from 86.5 percent in the third quarter. SICAS gathers production statistics from around the world for the benefit of the industry.
