AUGUST 2019 PHILIPPINE ELECTRONICS EXPORT PERFORMANCE

The electronics industry remains resilient with US$ 28.38 billion in exports (Year-to-Date, from January to August 2019), or 2.25% higher than the same period in 2018.

A. PH Electronic Exports: July 2019 versus August 2019 (Month-on-Month)

Electronic exports increased by 4.41%, from US$ 3.77 billion in July, to US$ 3.94 billion in August 2019 (see Fig. 1).

Seven out of nine sectors grew, led by Telecommunication at 34.27%, from US$ 58.97 million, to US$ 79.18 million this month. This was followed by Automotive Electronics (24.83%), Electronic Data Processing (18.59%), Office Equipment (7.55%), Medical / Industrial Instrumentation (7.37%), Components / Semiconductor Devices (6.36%), and Communication / Radar (3.85%). Two out of nine sectors decreased, led by Consumer Electronics at 59.43%, from US$ 102.60 million last month, to US$ 41.62 million this month. This was followed by Control and Instrumentation (21.20%).  Kindly refer to Table 2.


B. PH Electronic Exports: August 2018 versus August 2019 (Year-on-Year)

Electronic exports increased by 6.15%, from US$ 3.71 billion in August 2018, to US$ 3.94 billion in August 2019, as shown in Fig. 2.

 

Six out of nine sectors grew, led by Telecommunication at 104.97%, from US$ 38.63 million in August 2018, to US$ 79.18 million in August 2019. Other sectors that increased were Office Equipment (84.36%), Communication / Radar (62.31%), Automotive Electronics (8.10%), Electronic Data Processing (7.11%), and Components / Semiconductor Devices (4.08%). Three out of nine sectors decreased, led by Consumer Electronics at 37.69%, from US$ 66.80 million, to US$ 41.62 million this month. This was followed by Control and Instrumentation (7.50%), and Medical / Industrial Instrumentation (1.79%). Kindly refer to Table 2.

C. PH Electronic Exports: January-August 2018 versus January-August 2019 (Year-to- Date)

Cumulative electronic exports grew by 2.25%, from US$ 27.75 billion last year to US$ 28.38 billion this year. This comprises 60.84 % of total Philippine exports, year-to-date (see Fig. 3).

Six sectors increased from last year’s YTD figures. Office Equipment increased at 46.87%, from US$ 343.85 million last year to US$ 505.02 million this year. Other sectors that increased were Communication / Radar (41.28%), Consumer Electronics (19.21%), Telecommunication (13.46%), Automotive Electronics (4.90%), and Components / Semiconductor Devices (0.44%). Four sectors decreased, namely: Medical / Industrial Instrumentation (25.34%), Control and Instrumentation (7.27%), and Electronic Data Processing (1.06%). Kindly refer to Table 3.


COUNTRIES OF DESTINATION (AUGUST 2019)

As shown in Table 1, the top five (5) countries of destination in August 2019 were Hong Kong (19.98%), the People’s Republic of China (13.65%), the United States (13.23%), Singapore (7.29%), and Japan (7.02%).

Other destinations in the top ten were Germany (5.09%), Korea (4.61%), Taiwan (3.96%), Thailand (3.36%), and the Netherlands (3.05%).

The top exported electronics products for this month were Components / Semiconductor Devices, Electronic Data Processing, Communication / Radar, Consumer Electronics, and Office Equipment (refer to Fig. 4). Parts of electrical and electronic machinery bound for the USA increased by 294% but hard disk drives bound for Hong Kong decreased by 9% (see Table 4).
